Why have the Library hours changed for Fall 2025?
Answer
Q: Why is the library no longer open 24/7?
A: As part of the university’s broader efforts to address budget constraints, we reviewed usage data at the University Library and found that overnight visits to the library outside of finals week are very low. Changing overnight hours allows us to meet budget constraints while maintaining services where demand is greatest for our student and research communities.
Q: When will the library still be open 24/7?
A: The University Library will continue to offer 24/7 access during finals week throughout the Love Library and also in what will now be called the After-Hours Study Area (previously the 24/7 Study Area). We are expanding the number of days during finals when the Love Library will remain open, with the extended hours beginning the Monday before finals and ending the last day of finals.
Q: Outside of finals, what are the usual hours for the University Library?
A: Always check the library website (library.sdsu.edu) for updates on hours, which do change for holidays, university breaks and unexpected circumstances. In general, the hours are:
Main Library
- Monday - Thursday: 7 a.m. – 10 p.m.
- Friday: 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.
- Saturday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Sunday - Noon- 10 p.m.
After-Hours Study Area
- Monday - Thursday: 7 a.m. – midnight
- Friday: 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Saturday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Sunday: Noon - midnight
Q: Will staff or student jobs be affected by this change?
A: No. This change does not result in any staff layoffs or reduction in student employment,
Q: How were students involved in this decision?
A: The library has been listening to student feedback, especially around finals, to understand what they most need during the late, overnight hours. This is why the library opted to expand the days during which 24/7 access would be offered during finals week.
Q: Does this decision impact the library at SDSU Imperial Valley?
A: No, this decision does not impact SDSU Imperial Valley.
Q: How is the library using the savings from changing overnight hours?
A: The savings from reducing the paid security helps meet the library budget cut without having to cut student employees and further reduction of library collections.
Q: Is this change permanent?
A: The library is continuing to monitor student needs and usage patterns. We remain open to reassessing it in the future if the needs of our student and research communities change and additional funding becomes available.
